Arv DeGroot is retiring after 26 years with the SMBSC, including more than 20 years on the boiler house team!
Arv started his career as a pellet loader. He joined the boiler house as a coalman and through on-the-job training he progressed to an ashman and then to the burnerman position. As a burnerman, Arv was responsible for testing the quality of the water entering and leaving the boiler to ensure process parameters were met. Knowing how pH, conductivity and alkalinity affect the process is critical in this position. Arv was also responsible for the operation of the burner deck, including lighting oil guns and starting pulverizers.
Arv plans to play retirement by ear. He and his wife will continue annual trips to Sturgis, and he looks forward to time with his grandchildren.
