Renville, MN – April 1, 2016. Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative (SMBSC), a shareholder-owned producer of refined sugar and sugar products, announced today it has elected Steven J. Domm to be the next President of SMBSC.

Nearly two (2) years ago Kelvin Thompsen, SMBSC’s current President and Chief Executive Officer, announced his plan to transition out of these roles by Fall of 2016. Upon receiving this notice, SMBSC began an executive search to fill these roles. Domm will assume his position as President in June and that of CEO upon Thompsen’s departure later this summer.

A native of Wahpeton, North Dakota, Domm grew up on a small grain and sugar beet farm. He earned a B.S. in Agricultural Economics from North Dakota State University. Domm brings deep executive leadership experience in the agriculture, and his many achievements reveal strong aptitudes in all aspects of agribusiness, from strategic business growth to maximizing returns for growers.

Domm will join SMBSC from Cooperative Producers Inc. (CPI), Hastings, Nebraska, where has served as President and Chief Executive Officer since 2015. CPI is a locally owned cooperative with over 430 employees. Prior to joining CPI, Steve served General Manager for 14 years of Central Farmers Cooperative and FREMAR, LLC in Marion, South Dakota.

“Steve will be an excellent leader for our cooperative as we continue to maximize the efficiency and quality of all aspects of our operations,” said Kyle Petersen, chairman of the board of directors. “He brings expertise that will ensure we make sound capital investments in and upgrades to our facilities, continue developing strategic partnerships, and lead our industry in innovation, environmental stewardship, training and safety,” added Petersen.

Domm has served in various leadership capacities in many associations, including South Dakota Grain and Feed Association, North Dakota Grain Dealers Association, South Dakota Grain Dealers Association, National Grain and Feed Association, as well as having served as mayor of Colfax, North Dakota from 1993-2000.

Acknowledging the service of Kelvin Thompsen, with SMBSC since 2002, Petersen said, “We are grateful for Kelvin’s many years of exceptional leadership and bold vision. His accomplishments are many in his various roles here: first as Vice President of Agriculture, then Chief Operating Officer, and finally as President and CEO since January 2009. He has made our cooperative strong, increased value for our shareholders, and set a clear course for our continued success.”
