Manure Nitrogen Management

Average Nitrogen Analysis of Swine and Poultry Manure:

  • Swine: 36 Lbs. Nitrogen per 1000 gallons.
  • Poultry: 49 Lbs. Nitrogen per ton.

Try to obtain actual nutrient analysis of manure when possible. Nitrogen content can vary considerably by manure source and can often be much higher than the above averages. Use the above averages when the rate of manure is known but the nutrient analysis is not. The above manure analyses are averages acquired from Minnesota Extension Publications.

Three Year Nitrogen Availability averaged over method of application

First Year: 50%
Second Year: 25%
Third Year*: 10%

*Nitrogen availability after three cropping years is considered negligible.

When manure history is known but the manure type and/or application rate is not known:

Use a 50 lbs. per acre minimum Nitrogen credit for any manure application within two cropping seasons of the sugar beet crop.
