The factory offers a wealth of positions, which can be learned in as little as five days. This gives employees to exposure to areas including but not limited to process/operations, laboratory, heavy equipment/operation, shipping and logistics, and so much more!
If your current position no longer interests you, then you have the opportunity to bid to a new position and new area!
If you are specialized in an area such as welding, you are not limited to one type such as MIG and/or TIG. Our employees’ work load and type of work vary daily.
If you are specialized in electrical, you are not limited to small-scale projects– you have exposure to residential and commercial. You also gain exposure to programming!

Preventative Maintenance Supervisor

I’m like a lot of other people who work at SMBSC: I applied because I needed a job. I started out doing manual labor. Then I moved to the sugar warehouse, where I helped package and move sugar. From there my career really started to move. I was an Oiler and then moved to the maintenance side of SMBSC’s operations as a Mechanical and Electrical Helper before becoming a House Mechanic.

The on-the-job training prepared me for my Shift Supervisor position. I learned how to weld, build gear boxes and pumps and manage people. I use these skills daily to lead and direct others. My job has become a career, and I encourage others to apply because it’s a great place to work.

Human Resource Director

I joined SMBSC in December 1988,as the receptionist with responsibilities increasing to planning and publishing the company newsletter, coordinating the hiring function and conducting interviews and employee orientations for the factory and seasonal positions as well as enrolling employees in our benefits from health and dental insurance to the 401k plan. I continued to learn about the Cooperative and sat in on my first negotiations in 1990, which opened another opportunity for me to learn about the collective bargaining agreement.

In addition to various managers investing in me, I was given the opportunity to continue to develop myself by becoming certified as a Human Resource Generalist and later obtaining a Professional in Human Resource certification from the Society of Human Resource Management. With the education, continued on the job training and support of managers and co-workers, it brought more opportunities within the Cooperative and I later pursued my Bachelors of Science Degree in Business. The Cooperative offers an excellent educational aid policy that offsets the tuition and expenses and with the online courses, it was an excellent opportunity to prepare me for my next role with the Cooperative, Human Resource Director.
