The Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative (SMBSC), our growers and our employees share a deep commitment to supporting our community. We recognize the strength of our
cooperative depends on a strong and healthy community. We value the contributions many organizations make to helping our community, and we support their work by actively
participating in events and providing financial and in-kind support.
SMBSC is dedicated to helping those fighting cancer by supporting Renville County Walk in the Park, formerly known as Relay for Life. RC Hospital Foundation began
organizing Renville County Walk in the Park in 2018 after the American Cancer Society restructured their Relay for Life events. SMBSC vowed to continue support of the
event despite the structural change. SMBSC saw the new opportunity to allow donations to directly impact cancer patients in Renville County. Cancer attacks our moms,
dads, sisters and brothers, the local farmer, doctor, grocery store clerk, teacher...our children. Our donations truly impact cancer patients in our neighborhoods.
Throughout the year, SMBSC seeks to raise financial support for this important community initiative by:
Sponsoring the Walking Taco Food Wagon at the Renville County Walk in the Park event held in August. 100% of the money raised at the food stand goes directly to RC
Walk in the Park. SMBSC employees and their families volunteer time to coordinate this very successful annual event. Over the year, these employees also coordinate
meals to raise additional funds.
Sponsoring “Running to a Sweet Beet 5K Run/Walk”. The annual event has been sponsored by the Cooperative since 2010 in cooperation with Renville Sugar Beet Days.
SMBSC covers all costs for the event, so all registration fees are donated to RC Walk in the Park. Over the course of ten years, the "Running to a Sweet Beet 5K" has
raised over $40,000 for the fight against cancer.
- Providing opportunities for employees to sell baked goods with all proceeds donated to RC Walk in the Park.
All proceeds from each event are donated to RC Walk in the Park.
SMBSC participates in parades, kids’ festivals and community events. SMBSC employees and their families volunteer to walk in parades to distribute gifts and treats to the
community. SMBSC proudly supports our local county fairs. The "Bake it with Sugar " contests in the counties of Redwood, Yellow Medicine East, Chippewa, Renville,
Kandiyohi, and Swift are all sponsored by SMBSC. Customized pottery are provided as prizes to the local bakers!
During the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, SMBSC provides meals to those in need through the Christian Community Outreach Center. Financial donations are made by the
Employee Benefit Fund to cover expenses for a turkey dinner for those unable to prepare or afford their own holiday meal.
The fall of 2011 began a new annual tradition of SMBSC hosting ProAg Day, which includes the Cooperative's President & CEO providing educational bus tours of the
facility to local fifth and sixth graders.
SMBSC donates sugar to the Renville County Food Shelf.
The mission of Food for Kidz is to package and distribute nutritious meals to hungry children and families where crisis has struck and there is an
immediate need. SMBSC is delighted to supply Food for Kidz with our quality sugar year after year. It is a privilege to provide a necessary ingredient of food packets that help
eradicate hunger and starvation in the world.
Annual donations are made by the Employee Benefit Fund to help buy toys for children in need.
SMBSC believes in investing in our future and offers scholarships to the family members of our employees and shareholders.
