Cooperative and Community are Synonymous

The Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative (SMBSC), our growers and our employees share a deep commitment to supporting our community. We recognize the strength of our cooperative depends on a strong and healthy community. We value the contributions many organizations make to helping our community, and we support their work by actively participating in events and providing financial and in-kind support.

Partnership with American Cancer Society
SMBSC is dedicated to helping those fighting cancer by supporting the American Cancer Society (ACS), an organization working to find a cure for cancer and help those living with cancer manage day-to-day living. SMBSC has supported the ACS over many years to bring awareness and financial support to this important community initiative.
  • SMBSC sponsors the Walking Taco Food Wagon at the Renville County Relay for Life held in August. The money donated, together with donations made by various sugar beet seed companies, cover all expenses so 100% of the money raised goes directly to the ACS. SMBSC employees and their families volunteer time to coordinate this very successful annual event. Over the year, these employees also coordinate meals to raise additional funds.
  • SMBSC participates in “Ride for a Cure.” The 1st annual employee event was held in 2011.
  • SMBSC sponsors “Running to a Sweet Beet 5K Run/Walk”. The annual event has been sponsored by the Cooperative since 2010 in cooperation with Renville Sugar Beet Days. SMBSC covers all costs for the event, so all registration fees are donated to ACS.
  • SMBSC provides opportunities for employees to sell baked goods with all proceeds donated to ACS.
  • SMBSC sells raffle tickets for prizes and/or a dessert of the month with all proceeds donated to ACS.
  • SMBSC provides daffodils and teddy bears to local residents fighting cancer.
Community Festivals
SMBSC participates in parades, kids’ festivals and community events. The Cooperative donates cotton candy or rock candy suckers to be utilized for kids’ festivals and at local town celebrations. SMBSC employees and their families volunteer to ride on the Cooperative’s float to distribute gifts and treats to the community.

Heartland Express
Annual monetary donations from the Employee Benefit Fund provide bus rides to local residents for medical appointments who are unable to pay.

Holiday Meals
During the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, SMBSC provides meals to those in need through the Christian Community Outreach Center. Financial donations are made by the Employee Benefit Fund to cover expenses for a turkey dinner for those unable to prepare or afford their own holiday meal.

Minnesota Special Olympics
SMBSC sponsors employee teams that participate in the “Polar Plunge” to raise money for the Special Olympics.

ProAg Day
The fall of 2011 began a new annual tradition of SMBSC hosting ProAg Day, which included co-op President & CEO Kelvin Thompsen providing educational bus tours of the facility to local fifth and sixth graders.

Renville County Food Shelf
SMBSC donates sugar to the Renville County Food Shelf.

Renville County Santa’s Closet
